From 1897 until 1934, the greens in Pinehurst were composed of sand and clay. They were usually a square of about 40’ x 40,’ and were rolled daily and sprinkled with a mixture of oil and water. The surface was as hard as a billiard table! Old carpet remnants were used to “sweep” the greens after use. At one point, Gene Sarazen suggested that the golf hole be expanded to 8 inches, instead of the standard 4 1/4 inches. He thought that it would even out the playing field for average players. His idea was tried out in Pinehurst, and was found not to make an appreciable difference, and was not adopted. Our newly constructed sand green offers an example of both sizes, and a sand tee box.
